由于网络同人写作分布广泛,极难做定量分析,因此我此处只用英文和中文中具有代表性的两个同人网站:AO3和随缘居为例,看一看ABO设定这个亚类型是如何在网络同人社群中出现发展起来的。但必须明确:它们并不能完全代表英文和中文同人书写的全貌。AO3,英文全称Archive of Our Own,意即“我们自己的文库”,是粉丝自主创建的非政府组织“The Organization of Transformative Works”(意为二次创作协会,简称OTW)下属的同人文库[14]。文库有详细完备的标签系统,每篇同人文一般都有多达十个以上的标签说明分级、人物配对和敏感话题警告等事项。自2007年成立以来,AO3已有接近两百万篇同人作品,大多数是英文。随缘居是汉语圈一个重要的英美影视剧相关粉丝同人作品的集散地,需要注册登录进入才可以浏览文章,如今有5万篇左右同人作品[15]。比起大多数公开的汉语耽美论坛来说,随缘居和其他封闭论坛的最大特点就是没有对色情的审查,这对于ABO这个纯肉文高发设定来说尤为重要。

以最早进入中文的英文ABO设定同人,Velvet Mace写作,haiyo翻译并发表于随缘居的If You can’t Stand the Heat为例[20]。这篇同人以英国电视剧《神探夏洛克》中的夏洛克和约翰为主人公,其中夏洛克是Alpha,约翰是Omega,二人以不追求性关系的约定为前提做了室友。约翰由于抑制药物失效而意外进入发情期,两个人也就顺理成章地发生关系,产生联结,并准备一同养育孩子。故事在这里中止,因为作者没有写完。但已经发表的这些,已足以说明一些基本的问题。
